IU & Tongji Student Exhibition in Elnora, IN, & Hengsha Island, China Curated by Steenblik & Den Hartog
ELNORA, IN, — A groundbreaking cross-cultural academic design collaboration between Indiana University Bloomington and Tongji University’s CAUP Shanghai comes to fruition this winter with parallel exhibitions and the release of "Rural Moves," a comprehensive book documenting innovative approaches to rural revitalization in both the American Midwest and Eastern China.
The ambitious project, led by Professors R. Spencer Steenblik of Indiana University and Harry den Hartog of Tongji University, engaged 44 students in an intensive study of rural communities on opposite sides of the globe. While Indiana University students focused on Elnora, a town of 700 residents in southern Indiana, their Tongji University counterparts studied Hengsha Island near Shanghai. Despite the geographical distance, both communities face similar challenges in maintaining vitality and sustainability in a rapidly urbanizing world.
The exhibition, which opened at Elnora Town Hall on December 12th, showcases student proposals for rural revitalization alongside interactive art installations inspired by renowned designers and architects. A parallel exhibition at first on Hengsha island followed by the work being exhibited at Tongji , launched in mid-December, presents the complete body of work from both institutions. The project also featured a temporary exhibition on Hengsha Island, bringing the students' vision directly to the community they studied.
"This collaboration demonstrates the universal nature of rural challenges while highlighting the importance of locally-specific solutions," says Professor Steenblik. "Our students discovered that while rural communities across the globe face similar pressures, successful revitalization strategies must be deeply rooted in local culture and conditions."
The project culminates in a special lecture and book release event at the Elnora Town Hall on Monday, January 27th, 2025. The event, hosted by the Elnora Town Council, will feature presentations of student work and discussions about implementing proposed solutions. Representatives from Indiana University's Center for Rural Engagement are expected to attend, underscoring the project's potential impact on rural development strategies in Indiana.
The book "Rural Moves" documents the parallel investigations and proposed solutions, offering insights into rural revitalization strategies that could benefit communities worldwide. Named after the exhibition at the Aedes sponsored Regions on the Rise Conference where Professors Steenblik and den Hartog first met in China, the publication represents a significant contribution to the field of rural planning and design.
Interactive installations created by students will remain on display at the Elnora Town Hall, offering visitors a unique perspective on the intersection of technology, art, and rural development. These pieces, inspired by renowned interactive designers, demonstrate how new technologies and traditional community values can coexist and enhance rural life.
The exhibition will continue at Elnora Town Hall through [end date], with the book release and lecture event scheduled for January 27th at 7:00 PM. The public is invited to attend this free event and join the conversation about rural Indiana's future.
